An Overview of Professional Coaching

Contents:

What is Professional Coaching?
Coaching is a partnership between a trained coach and a client, which enables the client to begin living his/her dreams and desires faster and more effectively than the client would do alone.

A professional coach is an expert in helping people or business teams experience extraordinary results by achieving peak performance in any area they may designate. For individuals this might include career, life balance, relationships, health, finances, and/or spirituality. For businesses this might include determining Vision, Principles of Conduct, or Strategic Planning. The focus could be on developing leadership skills in the executive team or team building throughout the organization. Issues of organizational systems, communication systems, or profitability might be included.

In a February 5, 1996 article in Newsweek entitled "Need a Life? Get a Coach!", the author wrote "coaches work with managers, entrepreneurs, and just plain folks, helping them define and achieve their goals - career, personal or, most often, both."

How Did It Develop as a Profession?
Arising from the fields of consulting, training, and personal development, coaching is a distinct and recognized field. It has its own procedures, technology, subspecialties, and certification process.

One of the pioneers in the field, Thomas Leonard, was originally a financial advisor who found that his clients wanted advice and direction in many areas of their lives in addition to finances.

In 1992 he founded Coach University, a two-year professional training program for coaches. In 1998 the International Corporate Coaching Program was added to the Coach University curriculum. There are now a number of training programs in professional coaching throughout the United States and approximately 15,000 individuals who are either in training or already certified in the process.

The CSI staff has completed the Corporate Coach U Certification Program.

What is The Format for The Process?
Much like a coach in sports, a Personal and Executive Coach helps individuals and teams set bigger goals than they might otherwise be able to conceive. Together the coach and client form a partnership in which they implement new strategies, resolve problems, and assist the client in staying focused and on track.

There are several different ways that coaching may be conducted, including by telephone, e-mail, face-to-face, real time Internet, and group classes or workshops. Each program is customized to the particular needs and preferences of the client.

A common format for individual coaching is three weekly sessions per month, each 30-60 minutes in length, with additional e-mail and voice mail support, as needed. Common fees range from $300-$600 per month.

Formats for corporate coaching are varied and customized to the particular goals of the business. Common fees range from $600-$1,000 per hour.
